TECUMSEH, Neb. — A state inmate has been charged with multiple felonies after prosecutors say he attacked a corrections mental health specialist with a homemade weapon inside the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution on July 9.
What happened and who is charged
Prosecutors identified the defendant as 39-year-old Arthur Abdul-Aleem. Court filings say Abdul-Aleem is accused of using a Bic pen altered to include two razor blades in the assault. The complaint filed by prosecutors lists a total of six felony counts, including first-degree assault on a healthcare professional and attempted first-degree sexual assault.
Authorities say multiple corrections staff responded to the incident and restrained the inmate. The mental health specialist suffered cuts to the arm, thumb and forehead and received stitches at a hospital, according to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.
Court schedule and background
Abdul-Aleem’s arraignment is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Aug. 6. Documents in the case include a complaint that lays out the basic allegations; an arrest affidavit has not been filed publicly, according to court records provided with the complaint.
