Portland motorists should expect several overnight interstate closures this week and into August as the Oregon Department of Transportation carries out repairs, concrete pours and sign installation on two heavily used river crossings and the Rose Quarter stretch of I-5.
What’s happening and why
ODOT crews will close portions of northbound I-205 at the Abernethy Bridge overnight beginning Friday at 11 p.m. The work is focused on concrete pours and related bridge repairs between Oregon City and West Linn. Officials said the overnight work is intended to limit daytime traffic disruption while crews complete tasks that require full lane closures.
Separately, a closure affecting both directions of I-5 through Portland’s Rose Quarter is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Saturday for installation of a new overhead sign near the Oregon Convention Center. ODOT cautioned that the I-5 shutdown could extend into Sunday afternoon depending on the pace of the work.
“The I-5 closure could last through Sunday afternoon,” ODOT warned.
When the lanes will be closed
ODOT released an overnight schedule covering this weekend and the week ahead. The work requires lane and ramp closures that will affect morning and evening commutes as well as weekend travel.
| Day | Location | Expected timing |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | Northbound I-205 at Abernethy Bridge | Starting 11 p.m., through Saturday morning |
| Saturday into Sunday | I-5 through the Rose Quarter (both directions) | Beginning 10 p.m., possibly through Sunday afternoon |
| Monday–Thursday | Interstate Bridge (I-5), one direction nightly | Nights, starting at about 10–11 p.m. with early morning re-openings |
How this may affect Portland residents
- Commuters using I-5 through the Rose Quarter should plan alternate routes for Saturday night into Sunday and expect delays if the work runs long.
- Drivers traveling between Oregon City and West Linn on northbound I-205 will encounter overnight closures and ramp restrictions.
- Freight and commercial traffic that operates overnight should account for the Abernethy Bridge shut down and the potential for staged detours on I-5.
ODOT said the closures are part of a series of planned maintenance and inspection activities on aging road and bridge infrastructure. Crews will also shut lanes during the coming week to inspect the Interstate Bridge; those closures will occur in one direction each night Monday through Thursday and require shutting the roadway while crews work on the bridge deck and overhead elements.
Transportation officials have been scheduling more nighttime work to minimize the effect on daytime traffic, but that places the burden on drivers to check conditions before traveling. For Portlanders planning weekend activities or early Sunday travel, the Rose Quarter outage is the most disruptive single event laid out so far.
ODOT recommends motorists check agency traffic alerts and local news sources for the latest timing and detour information before driving through central Portland or across the Abernethy Bridge this weekend.
