City schedules replacement fireworks at Soldier’s Field for Labor Day weekend
The City of Rochester announced Friday that a make-up fireworks display for the curtailed July 4 show will be held on Friday, Sept. 4, the start of the Labor Day weekend. The event will take place at Soldier’s Field, though an official start time has not yet been set.
The July 4 presentation was shortened after a combination of extreme daytime heat and a last-minute decision to advance the launch time to beat approaching storms left the show incomplete. Organizers moved the start time from 10 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; the first shell was reported to have been fired about 9:45 p.m., with the display ending within minutes.
In the days after the abbreviated show, the pyrotechnics company told city officials that sustained high temperatures had taken a toll on the crew and, coupled with the compressed schedule, resulted in insufficient time to complete the planned display. The city has been working with the vendor to schedule a make-up event.
“The City has developed a communication plan for the event to help ensure attendees receive timely information if weather or other circumstances affect the fireworks display.”
The announced communication plan is intended to reduce confusion should weather or other issues arise again. City leaders did not provide a start time for the Sept. 4 event on Friday; they said more details, including timing and safety guidance for the crowd, will be released closer to the date.
- Date: Friday, Sept. 4 (Labor Day weekend)
- Location: Soldier’s Field, Rochester
- Status: Make-up show confirmed; start time pending
For Rochester and Olmsted County officials, the make-up display raises several operational considerations: coordinating crowd control and parking on a holiday weekend, ensuring reliable vendor staffing amid forecasts of late-summer heat, and delivering clear, timely messaging to residents to avoid the confusion that followed the July 4 event.
The decision to hold the presentation on the Friday of Labor Day weekend places it on a nationally busy travel and event weekend, which may increase attendance compared with a midweek date. City emergency services and event planners will need to balance visitor needs with local traffic patterns, public safety staffing and any residual pandemic-era adjustments to public gatherings.
