Little Rock — Two people were arrested and charged with capital murder following a pre-dawn shooting Tuesday that left a 44-year-old man dead on West 10th Street, authorities said Wednesday.
What happened
Police responded at 6:09 a.m. to the 4200 block of W. 10th St. and found Jose Quiroz-Mata, 44, inside a white Chevrolet pickup with a gunshot wound to the left side of his head and three additional wounds to his left shoulder. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Little Rock Police Department news release and court-related records.
Officers arrested Yudith Reyes, 49, and Luis Reyes-Isabel, 22. Arrest reports show Reyes was taken into custody at 10:52 a.m. Tuesday; Reyes-Isabel was arrested later the same day at 4:33 p.m. Both pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Little Rock District Court and are being held without bond in the Pulaski County jail.
Evidence and investigation
Investigators located and unlocked Quiroz-Mata’s phone with information provided by family members and said it contained a video recorded shortly before the shooting. The affidavit describes a black pickup obstructing the roadway and a man identified as Reyes-Isabel approaching the victim’s vehicle and firing multiple times.
“recorded five gunshots”
Police said the city’s ShotSpotter gunshot detection system captured five shots, and officers recovered three .380-caliber shell casings at the scene. The affidavit states three of the five shots struck the victim.
Related court records and immigration note
Court documents show that on July 8, 6th Judicial Circuit Judge LaTonya Honorable granted Quiroz-Mata’s request for a temporary order of protection against Reyes. The order listed Quiroz-Mata’s address as 4010 W. 10th St. and was set to remain in effect until Aug. 11.
Booking records list Reyes as born in Cuba and Reyes-Isabel as born in Puebla, Mexico. The jail roster also indicates Reyes-Isabel is being held on a detainer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Local stakes and next steps
The case touches on multiple issues affecting Pulaski County and the state: domestic violence protections, the role of technology such as ShotSpotter in gun investigations, and coordination between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Prosecutors have charged both suspects with capital murder; the proceedings will move through the Pulaski County court system, where next appearances and potential grand jury actions are expected but were not detailed in the arrest reports.
