A Georgia angler has reeled in a once-in-a-lifetime catch. Caroline Langdale, visiting Idaho’s South Fork Snake River during a multiday fishing trip, landed a brown trout measuring 30.5 inches on May 30. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has since verified the fish as a new state record.
How the record catch unfolded
Langdale was fishing with guide Ed Emory of South Fork Lodge when she felt a hard tug while drifting a rubber-leg fly through a deep hole. What she first suspected might be a snag turned into a nearly 10-minute battle before the fish was brought to the surface and measured by her guide.
"I never dreamed when I started my day of fishing with Emory of South Fork Lodge that God was going to bless me with a fish of a lifetime," Langdale said.
Brown trout of this size are extremely rare in the South Fork Snake River, a waterway known among anglers for producing large specimens with distinctive yellowish coloring and long, angular faces. State fisheries staff note that fish larger than 30 inches appear in the agency's survey records only occasionally.
Why this matters to anglers and fisheries managers
Martin Koenig, sportfishing program coordinator for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, has said large trout can be undercounted by standard survey gear, meaning some big fish likely go undetected during routine monitoring. Still, record-sized catches help biologists better understand the upper extremes of fish growth and provide valuable publicity for the river’s angling opportunities.
- Angler: Caroline Langdale (Georgia)
- Location: South Fork Snake River, Idaho
- Date of catch: May 30
- Measured length: 30.5 inches
- Guide on trip: Ed Emory, South Fork Lodge
The catch was documented with photos and submitted to Idaho Fish and Game’s sportfish coordinator for confirmation, following standard procedure for record fish. Fisheries surveys conducted since 1986 include more than 57,600 brown trout from the South Fork Snake River, but only a handful have exceeded 30 inches — underscoring how uncommon Langdale’s fish is.

For Georgia anglers, the story is a reminder of the unpredictable rewards of time on the water and the value of guided trips on well-known fisheries. Langdale called the experience a blessing she will always remember, and her catch adds to the long-running reputation of the South Fork Snake River as a place where anglers occasionally connect with truly exceptional fish.
