A young man who left for a Fourth of July boat trip never returned. Two days after he was last seen alive, the body of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells was discovered early Monday along the shore of Horn Island, the uninhabited barrier island roughly 7 miles off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.
Family seeks transparency, questions official narrative
Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, say the circumstances surrounding their son’s death are clouded by conflicting accounts and missing details. At a Friday news conference in New York City, joined by civil-rights attorney Ben Crump and the Rev. Al Sharpton, the family pressed for a thorough and transparent investigation and expressed skepticism about suggestions that Wells simply drowned or told friends to leave the island without him.
"We just want to know what happened and why our baby didn't come home," Christine Wonsley said.
The family has hired an independent forensic pathologist in Washington, D.C., to perform a separate autopsy while awaiting the results of the official autopsy, which officials say could take weeks. They also plan to retain experts to attempt recovery of messages that appear to have been deleted from Wells’ cellphone; the family intends to turn the device over to authorities after that process, Crump said.
Where the case stands
Investigators have said Wells left for Horn Island on a boat with friends to celebrate the holiday. A photograph shared on social media and cited by the family’s lawyers reportedly shows Wells with his arms around three white male friends during the boat ride. Local authorities, including the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, have asked for witnesses and any video footage that could clarify the last known movements and interactions before Wells disappeared.
- Location: Horn Island, an 11-mile-long barrier island, accessible only by boat and uninhabited.
- Timeline: Left for a July 4 boat trip; missing; found dead early Monday, two days after last seen.
- Crowd: Family lawyers estimate about 200 people were on the island that day.

The case has resurfaced long-standing concerns in Mississippi about transparency in investigations and community trust in law enforcement, particularly when details are contested and families seek outside review. The family’s public appeals underscore their desire for witnesses to come forward and for any video recordings to be shared with investigators.
Officials with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office are continuing the probe; a sheriff’s spokesman named in public reporting is John Ledbetter. Authorities have not publicly released a cause of death pending autopsy findings.
For community members who may have been on Horn Island that weekend or who captured footage on phones or cameras, law enforcement and the family’s legal team have reiterated requests to submit any material that could shed light on Wells’ final hours. The family has said it will await both the independent and official autopsy results before making further public statements about cause or manner of death.
This remains an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Jackson County Sheriff's Office or the family’s legal representatives.
