SYRACUSE — A late-night fire at a two-story house on South Avenue damaged the home and displaced six residents, Syracuse fire officials said. Firefighters were called to 130 South Ave. at about 11:16 p.m. on July 9 and found heavy smoke coming from both floors.
Initial response and firefighting effort
Crews located the blaze in the basement and fought the bulk of the fire from the exterior by directing water into the basement, according to a Syracuse Fire Department news release. Firefighters later re-entered the building to extinguish hotspots and ensure the blaze did not spread.
"The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes and was fully extinguished after 50 minutes."
Firefighters remained on scene for more than four hours. In addition to city fire units, Syracuse police, an AMR ambulance crew and National Grid personnel responded.
Damage, displacement and assistance
SFD reported the basement sustained significant fire damage, while smoke and water affected the rest of the house. There were no reported injuries.
- Number of people displaced: 6
- Primary fire location: basement
- Time dispatched: ~11:16 p.m., July 9
- Assistance on scene: American Red Cross
The American Red Cross was on scene to assist the displaced residents. The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
Local context and next steps
Fires that begin in basements can spread quickly through a home via stairwells and utility chases; smoke and water damage often extend throughout the structure even when flames are confined. The extended presence of emergency crews and utility workers at the scene indicates inspections and safety checks were completed before residents could return, though the release said the six residents were displaced and required Red Cross support.
