What reopens and what changes for residents
The City of Santa Ana on Saturday reopened the Newhope Library branch after a year-long closure for renovations, restoring neighborhood access to books, study space and new technology while expanding hours and programming for residents on the city’s west side.
The Newhope branch serves about 125,000 residents in the Riverview West area and is one component of a broader $46 million citywide investment in Santa Ana’s public libraries that began in 2024.
Upgrades at Newhope
The renovation, which began in July 2025 and kept the branch closed for roughly a year, delivers several physical and programmatic improvements aimed at broadening community use:
- Innovation Lab: A new space equipped with computers loaded with select Adobe applications for hands-on STEM and digital media learning for all ages.
- Exterior and entrance: A refreshed colorful façade and glass storefront entrance to increase visibility and accessibility.
- Outdoor patio: New seating plus a shaded structure to support reading and small gatherings outdoors.
- Interior updates: Additional reading and study spaces and new seating throughout the branch.
- Service hours: The branch reopened with extended hours to give residents more time for study, computer access and programs.

How this fits into the citywide plan
The Newhope work is one piece of Santa Ana’s multi-site library overhaul. The city has also launched two new locations in the last year: the Delhi Center Library and an outdoor library at Jerome Park. Meanwhile, the comprehensive restoration of the city’s Main Library — a midcentury building near downtown and the civic center — has been underway since 2024.
The Main Library restoration emphasizes preservation of its historic midcentury character while upgrading building systems. The city plans to retain the original layout and design, including a full restoration of the building’s Italian marble exterior, and to modernize mechanical, plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems. The Main Library is expected to reopen this fall.
| Project | Recent action |
|---|---|
| Newhope Library | Reopened after year-long renovation (Innovation Lab, outdoor patio, extended hours) |
| Main Library | Under comprehensive restoration since 2024; expected completion this fall |
| Delhi Center Library & Jerome Park outdoor library | Opened in prior year as new city locations |
Local consequences and next steps
For neighbors, the immediate impact is restored access to free internet-connected computers, more flexible hours and new spaces for learning and small group study. The Innovation Lab’s Adobe-equipped computers may support digital skills training and creative projects that were previously limited by equipment availability.
City officials framed the Newhope reopening as part of a sustained investment in public learning infrastructure. The coming months will focus on finishing the Main Library restoration and expanding programming across the renovated and new branches.
