Democrats in Maine are holding special county nomination meetings this weekend as candidates for the party’s U.S. Senate nomination press their cases ahead of a state convention next week in Bangor.

County meetings, electronic votes and a crowded field

Party officials say more than 11,000 Mainers have been pre-verified to participate in the county gatherings scheduled across the state’s 16 counties. The meetings will produce delegates who will attend a statewide convention in Bangor where the Democratic nominee to face Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November will be chosen.

The Maine Democratic Party is allowing county meeting participants to cast ballots electronically using what the party described as a secure online voting system. After the county meetings conclude, a total of 601 delegates and state committee members will convene in Bangor to select the nominee.

Candidates on the road

On Friday, supporters gathered on the Eastern Prom in Portland to hear State Senate President Troy Jackson outline his case for the nomination. Jackson framed his campaign as a grassroots effort and was joined by labor leaders, organizers and community advocates.

Also campaigning Friday, Dr. Nirav Shah held a press conference in which he argued that his performance in last month’s gubernatorial preference tally demonstrates his ability to unify Democrats.

“The results from lasts month’s gubernational, where again I secured the highest number of first choice votes, are evident that I can unify Democrats and make sure that together we present a united force that is going to be needed to defeat Susan Collins,” Shah said.

What happens next

  • County nomination meetings take place across all 16 counties this weekend.
  • County attendees—including those voting electronically—will elect delegates to the state convention.
  • A total of 601 delegates and state committee members will gather in Bangor next weekend to name the Democratic nominee.

These special county meetings are a departure from a primary-style process; instead, local Democrats will elect delegates who reflect their preferences and carry those choices to the statewide convention. The party’s use of an online ballot aims to broaden participation, according to officials, and to accommodate those who cannot attend in person.

The process will determine who stands against Collins in November. Voters and observers in Maine will watch whether the county-by-county delegate selection and the party’s electronic voting rollout produce broad participation and a nominee who can consolidate support for the general election.

News Block will follow developments from county meetings through the Bangor convention and report results as the Democratic Party finalizes its choice.
