MESQUITE — A northbound Interstate 15 collision near Mesquite on July 4 prompted motorists to stop and pull an occupant from a burning motorhome after a blown tire caused the recreational vehicle to cross the center median and strike a semi-truck, Nevada State Police said.

Immediate scene and rescues

Witnesses said the motorhome crossed into traffic and tumbled down the embankment before striking the large commercial vehicle and igniting. Drivers who saw the crash pulled over and ran to the wreck to assist before emergency crews arrived.

One of those who stopped, retired Army National Guard veteran Steven Grossman, told reporters he and other motorists worked together to remove a man from the motorhome as flames spread and a propane tank later exploded.

"We just grabbed him and just tugged him into the gutter right there, into the center medium," Grossman said.

Grossman said he used his military medical training to keep the man still, while another bystander helped stabilize the victim's neck until paramedics reached the scene.

Casualties and official information

Nevada State Police confirmed the motorhome had a blown tire shortly before it crossed the median and collided with the semi. The motorhome's driver, 62-year-old Gregory Louis Painter, was transported to a hospital and later died.

Fire officials reported that three other people were taken to local hospitals with injuries. Authorities have not publicly released additional identities or conditions of the other injured occupants.

Impact on travelers and safety reminders

The crash occurred on a stretch of I-15 that serves as a primary route between southern Nevada and communities to the northeast. Drivers should expect increased emergency response activity and possible delays when incidents occur along this corridor.

  • One fatality: Gregory Louis Painter, 62, driver of motorhome (died at hospital).
  • Three others: Transported to hospitals for injuries.
  • Cause reported: Blown tire on the motorhome leading to loss of control.

Local officials have not released a full collision report, and the Nevada State Police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the motorhome veering across the median. Motorists with relevant dash-camera footage or who witnessed the crash are asked to contact state police to assist in the investigation.

As a community, Mesquite and travelers on I-15 saw how bystanders can make a critical difference in the moments before first responders arrive. Emergency responders emphasize that while offering help can save lives, bystanders should take care to avoid putting themselves in danger, especially when fires or exploding fuel sources are involved.
