The body of a Hollister delivery driver was found last week inside the trunk of a Tesla abandoned on the shoulder of Highway 152, and investigators have classified the death as a homicide, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
Authorities identified the victim as Javier Becerril, 42, a resident of Hollister who worked for the food-delivery service DoorDash. His family reported him missing before the vehicle containing his body was discovered Thursday near the San Luis Reservoir, CHP said.
What investigators are doing
CHP detectives described the circumstances as suspicious and said they are treating the case accordingly. They are analyzing the Tesla’s onboard computer and any recorded data or video that could help identify those responsible.
“There are circumstances that are suspicious, and that's why we're treating it as such,” a CHP investigator said.
Officials did not release further details about the condition of the body, possible suspects or a timeline for the killing. The investigation remains active and CHP asked anyone with information to contact investigators through their usual tip lines.
Local response and the victim’s family
In Hollister, colleagues and community members have begun informal memorials. Fellow delivery drivers placed tributes in a Safeway parking lot where Becerril often picked up orders.
A family-organized fundraiser described Becerril as “a father, devoted son, caring brother, and cherished cousin” and said proceeds will go toward funeral and memorial costs as well as financial support for his children.
“Javier had a kind heart, a generous spirit, and was always willing to help those he loved,” the fundraiser states.

Authorities continue to interview witnesses and examine physical and digital evidence. The Tesla’s onboard systems are a key focus of the probe because they may contain video or data that could identify persons who were with the vehicle or chart its recent movements.
As the investigation proceeds, law enforcement has asked the public to report any relevant information. No arrests have been announced.
Reporting on the scene and following developments will continue as CHP releases more information about the case and any leads that emerge.
